Laundry Pickup & Delivery, Explained: Costs, Apps & What to Expect
Laundry pickup & delivery went from luxury to mainstream fast — most US metro areas now have several options. If you've never used one, here's exactly how it works and what it'll cost.
How it works
- You bag everything. No sorting needed — one bag, everything in it. Note any special instructions in the app or order form (hang-dry list, detergent allergies).
- A driver picks it up from your door, porch or building lobby during a window you choose.
- It's washed, dried and folded — by a professional facility, a partner laundromat, or a vetted individual, depending on the service.
- It comes back folded, usually in 24–48 hours, shrink-wrapped or bagged.
What it costs
Almost everyone prices per pound: $1.50–$3.00/lb nationally, with minimums of 15–25 lb. Typical orders: a single person's two weeks ≈ 20 lb ($35–$55); a family week ≈ 30–40 lb ($50–$100). Comforters, pillows and dry cleaning are priced per item. Recurring weekly/biweikly plans usually save 10–15% — on Long Island, for example, next-day service runs $2.25/lb with a 20 lb minimum and 10% off recurring pickups (details here).
Apps vs. your local laundromat's van
| National apps (Poplin, Rinse…) | Local laundromat delivery | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Most of the US | Their own service area |
| Price | Often higher after fees & tip | Often cheaper, flat per-lb |
| Who washes it | Gig worker or partner facility | The laundromat's own staff |
| Scheduling | App, on-demand | Set routes/days, by phone or site |
Neither is universally better. Apps win on convenience and coverage; local operators win on price, consistency (same hands every week), and accountability — you know exactly where your clothes are. Listings tagged "Pickup & delivery" in our directory offer it directly.
First-order tips
- Count or photograph anything you'd hate to lose; keep truly precious items out of the bag.
- State preferences up front: water temp, dryer heat, fold style, hangers.
- Weigh your bag at home once (bathroom scale: you, then you + bag) so the invoice never surprises you.
- Start with a one-time order before committing to a recurring plan.
